<image:title>Let's get started - SETTING UP THE CHESS BOARD The chess board consists of 64 squares with 8 horizontal ranks and 8 vertical files. If you look closely at a chess board, you will see numbers and letters. They are used for “Algebraic notation,” a method for recording and describing the moves in a game of chess. The vertical columns of squares, called files, are labeled a through h from White's left (the queenside) to right (the kingside). The horizontal rows of squares, called ranks, are numbered 1 to 8 starting from White's side of the board. Each square has a unique identification of file letter followed by rank number.</image:title>

      <image:title>About - How it all started</image:title>
<image:caption>It all began when Peter was a young, chubby rambunctious kid who loved to run around and cause a ruckus. He could never sit still and often found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, even kicked out of a scholastic concert. As a last resort to change the trajectory of Peter’s path and hopefully refine Peter’s patience, drive, and concentration, his father introduced him to chess. Without his father’s and mother’s patience, dedication, and full support, he would not be where he is today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mini Games - How many moves does it take to capture this piece? This improves the calculation and visual-spatial skills. Place a piece down for the beginner (knight, bishop, rook, queen, or king). Place a piece of the opposite color somewhere else on the board. Ask the beginner how many moves does it take for his/her piece to capture the enemy pieces. Repeat with different pieces and different distances. You can allow the child to physically move the piece on the board, or challenge the child to visualize the movements without physically touching the pieces.</image:title>

Step 3: The child gets 1 king + 1 queen. You get one king. Step 4: The child gets 1 king + 1 rook. You get one king. Step 5: The child gets 1 king + 2 bishops + 1 rook. You get one king. Step 6: The child gets 1 king + 2 bishops. You get one king.</image:title>

<image:title>Mini Games - Pawn only game with pieces You can slowly add pieces to the pawns to both sides of the board (i.e. knights only, bishops only, rooks only, king only, and queen only). This introduces the pieces slowly and allows the child to understand how to use them. Continue to play until one person captures all the opponent’s pieces. Once the child plays all the combination of the games, he or she will have learned to use all the pieces!</image:title>

<image:title>Mini Games - Pawn wars (pawn only game) The game is set up with only pawns, no other pieces The objective is to get a pawn to the other side of the board This simplifies the chess game (less pieces to consider) and indirectly teaches a child how pawn moves and attacks, and how they defend each other.</image:title>

<image:title>Intro to Tactics - In chess, tactics focus on short-term actions. It is a forced combination of moves, that allow you to make progress towards achieving your objectives. It involves calculation and thinking ahead and leads to an advantage or a winning position! The depth of calculation depends on the player's ability. The more you practice, the faster you calculate, the more patterns you recognize, and the stronger you become!</image:title>

<image:title>How Pieces Move - Knight - Knights move in an L shape (see diagram on the left). One way to remember is to move the piece 2 squares straight in any direction, and one square across. Knights capture enemy pieces the same way they move. Knights are the only pieces that can jump over other pieces. In the 4 diagrams below, you can see how the knight moves (in red), as well as why it is generally better for knights to be placed closer to the center. With a more centralized position, your knight has more options to move.</image:title>

<image:title>How Pieces Move - Bishop - Bishops start off placed next to the King and Queen Bishops move diagonally and capture the same way they move (see the diagram on the left) You start with 1 bishop of each color square (one dark bishop that can only move on the dark squares, and one light bishop that can only move on the light squares). Tip: it is a good idea to keep pawns on the opposite color of your bishops so that your bishops do not get blocked by your own pawns.</image:title>

<image:title>How Pieces Move - Rook - The rook moves horizontally or vertically, through any number of unoccupied squares (see diagram on the left). The rook captures an enemy piece with the same movement. The rook also participates, with the king, in a special move called castling (which will be explained in another section) The rook is a valuable piece (worth 5 points). It is a good idea to place your rooks behind your pawns or other pieces. Rooks are also great to place behind open rows (where there are no pawns in the column to block the path of the rook) or half open rows (where only 1 pawn of one color is occupying the column).</image:title>

<image:title>How Pieces Move - Pawn - Normally a pawn moves by advancing a single square, but the first time a pawn moves, it has the option of advancing two squares (see diagram on the left). Unlike the other pieces, pawns cannot move backwards. Pawns may not use the initial two-square advance to jump over an occupied square, or to capture. UNLIKE other pieces, pawns do not capture enemy pieces the same way they move. Pawns move forward only but can only capture pieces 1 square diagonal and in front of them (see diagrams below). When a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it is PROMOTED and can turn into a Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight. You choose! PAWNS HAVE A SPECIAL MOVE! En passant It is a special pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a pawn makes a move of two squares from its starting square, and it could have been captured by an enemy pawn had it advanced only one square. More details below.</image:title>

<image:title>How Pieces Move - King - The king is the most important piece in the game of chess. The object of the game is to threaten the opponent's king so that escape is not possible (i.e. checkmate). If a player's king is threatened with capture, it is said to be in check, and the player must remove the threat of capture on the next move. If this cannot be done, the king is said to be in checkmate, resulting in a loss for that player. Players cannot make any move that places their own king in check. Kings move (and capture) by moving 1 square in any direction (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal). There is a special move that the king has, called castling!</image:title>

<image:title>How Pieces Move - Queen - The queen is the most powerful piece in the game of chess and can move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Each player starts the game with one queen, placed in the middle of the first rank next to the king. She captures enemy pieces the same way she moves. Because the queen is the strongest piece, a pawn is promoted to a queen in most cases.</image:title>
